Our Laboratory Medicine Department has an outstanding opportunity for an INSTRUMENT INTERFACE SPECIALIST (SENIOR COMPUTER SPECIALIST). The person in this role will perform the following duties:
Operational:
- Manage the instrument interfaces in the Laboratory Information System (LIS). This includes building, testing and modifying the following: instrument interface configuration, connections to and from LIS to vendor instrument or middleware or both, test menus and online string, online entry worksheet calculations, and autofiling (autoverification) configuration and validation.
- Responsible for analyzing interface methods and technical requirements for interfaces, automation lines, and middleware as well as coordinating the technical aspects for the instrument interfaces between network operations, Lab Med, Sunquest, and the instrument vendors. Currently, we have approximately 100 instrument interfaces and add additional interfaces each year.
- Performs general application maintenance as assigned. This includes building and modify the following: test, battery and package definitions, primary and aliquot tube definitions, lab locations, lab worksheets, result calculations, printers, barcode label devices, patient location index for 3 medical centers, physician index for 3 medical centers, assist with other updates to the LIS, including routine test maintenance and software overlays, etc.
- Guide and assist all laboratory divisions in assessing the impact of changes to the system and in developing appropriate operational procedures to ensure database integrity by utilizing change control practices.
- Monitor the Laboratory Information System database integrity and evaluating the impact of changes to the database.
- Manage and monitor system security. This includes setting up and monitoring user accounts for both Lab Med staff and non Lab Med staff. Annual review all LIS user accounts.
- Coordinate database updates and other needed changes with multiple IT groups from all of our different electronic health record systems, billing systems and ancillary systems which includes ORCA, Epic, Mindscape, Xifin, etc.
- Create and maintain documentation for processes and procedures as well as regulatory requirements including CAP, DOH, CLIA, HIPPA, FDA, etc.
- Create and maintain user training materials as well as assist in training new staff members.
- Assist users in all Laboratory Medicine divisions as well as users outside the department (SCCA, NWH, UWNC, etc) in determining how the LIS can best meet their needs.
Projects and Development:
- Research instrument interface options and development with our vendors including Sunquest and Data Innovations.
- Work with other UWMC affiliated clinical system analysts on LIS or other clinical application projects including but not limited to ORCA, Epic, Soarian and Mindscape.
- Assist with annual or biannual LIS and other clinical information systems software version upgrades.
- Perform project analysis for, and coordinate conversion and implementation of major software upgrades, minor software updates, and product liability alerts. Work with Lab Med PMOs to coordinate projects with outside departments and divisions.
- Test and evaluate the impact of software modifications and any required updates to laboratory operations and coordinate the implementation of major software upgrades not only for the LIS but also with lab instrument vendors.
- Guide and assist all laboratory divisions in assessing the impact of changes to the system and in developing appropriate operational procedures to ensure database integrity.
Troubleshooting:
- Serve as primary contact for LIS instrument interface issues and troubleshooting for approximately 100 instrument interfaces.
- On call rotation responsibilities are 24/7 on a rotating weekly schedule. During on call rotation, this position is the primary point of contact for over 1000 LIS users as well as multiple ancillary clinical systems including but not limited to ORCA, Epic, Soarian and Mindscape.
- When not on call, this position will be the secondary point of contact for issues that cannot be resolved by the on call person.
- Troubleshoot and resolve user and Lab Information System problems and issues of all types.
- Coordinate with analysts from other UWMC systems which include ORCA, Epic, Mindscape, Xifin, etc, to resolve issues.
- Resolve user computer, software and network problems. Report application or network problems to appropriate sources which may include UW ITS, ORCA, Epic, CSI, etc.
- Resolve LIS user production and test area access issues.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in science field AND 2- 3 years work experience.
Additional Requirements:
- Laboratory instrument interface experience.
- Experience with interface middleware.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements.
