Probation Institution Supervisor
Salary: $53,490.00 - $65,190.00 Annually
Multiple vacancies with the Probation Department at the Juvenile Detention Facility in Visalia. Facilities operate 24 hours and employees work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, on a rotational basis. This list will be used to fill current and future vacancies. The anticipated life of the list is six months.
Typical Duties
Assign, monitor and evaluate Probation Correctional Officer work and performance; provide training and employee development to staff; direct the activities and the operations of the Juvenile Detention Facility or other Probation Department detention/commitment facility under the supervision of the -Manager or Supervising Probation Officer; supervise rehabilitation programs and activities, assuring staff are meeting program guidelines and requirements; supervise individual and group counseling; review reports submitted by officers for accuracy and completeness; inform staff of changes, special events, and activities pertaining to their shift and to staff under their supervision; train and/or oversee provision of training for new personnel; supervise searches for contraband throughout the facility, in mail, or on detainees/wards; supervise collection, inventory, and recording of all personal property and monies belonging to detainees/wards; oversee discipline of detainees/wards according to laws and guidelines for violations; oversee supervision, screening, and instruction of visitors, volunteers and church groups; represent the Probation Department at court appearances; arrange consultations with Probation Officers or Attorneys; arrange for security and transportation for detainees/wards appearing in court; supervise first aid, medical appointments, and medicines for detainees/wards; plan recreational activities for detainees/wards; ensure proper equipment is available for recreation; order, maintain and issue supplies and equipment to staff and detainees/wards; maintain knowledge of current policy and procedures for the facilities and changes in laws affecting juvenile institutions; maintain knowledge of County policies.
Employment Standards
Education/Experience - Equivalent to two years of college with major course work in a behavioral or social science and two years experience as a California Probation Correctional Officer or Juvenile Correctional Officer. Must have successfully completed Probation Correctional Officer/Juvenile Correctional Officer CORE training.
Knowledge of - Booking and releasing procedures; security procedures; court procedures; the laws of arrest, search, and detention of persons in institutions; math sufficient to maintain inventories; various sports and games; institution and departmental policies; basic first aid and CPR; principles of supervision; counseling and interviewing techniques.
Skill/Ability to - Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers; operate contemporary office equipment inclusive of computer, keyboard, and all applicable electronic equipment.
Read and interpret rules and regulations; keep legible, accurate and continuing records; write clear and accurate reports; mediate, counsel, and discipline detainees/wards; identify contraband, weapons and illegal items; organize and schedule work assignments; deal with a variety of people in various emotional states; supervise, train and evaluate staff; develop, implement and evaluate programs; handle safety/security situations efficiently; work cooperatively with peace officers, public officials and the general public.

Conditions of Employment
Applicants must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Prior to employment, applicants who are not currently a peace officer employed with Tulare County Probation Department must successfully pass a medical exam that includes drug and alcohol screening, a psychological evaluation, and a thorough background investigation to determine fitness for the position.
Applicants must meet the minimum Peace Officer Standards as defined in California Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031. Applicants must have a reputation of honesty and trustworthiness. A felony conviction will be disqualifying and convictions for misdemeanors and traffic offenses will be assessed on a case-by case basis. The background investigation will include reports from former employers, educational institutions, law enforcement agencies, or other relevant sources.
As part of the background investigation process, all applicants subject to a background investigation will be required to submit to a CVSA examination. The CVSA examination is used to verify the veracity and accuracy of information submitted by applicants regarding, but not necessarily limited to use of controlled substances, driving, criminal history, employment history, and other suitability factors. Candidates will be fingerprinted by Live Scan as a required part of the background investigation. Each fingerprint is scanned into a computer database at the Department of Justice and checked against criminal records nationwide. Information received may include charges that have been dismissed.
All applicants will be required to pass a physical abilities exam.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.

College Cost Reduction Access Act
This may be a qualifying position for student loan forgiveness through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act (CCRAA). Only student loan payments made after October 1, 2007 and in a qualified repayment plan are eligible.
