Community Resource Specialist
South County Fire in Everett, WA is currently recruiting for a Community Resource Specialist.

Summary: This position provides and coordinates a variety of community risk reduction programs and population health initiatives involving South County Fire personnel. This position enhances community connections and works closely with other divisions to coordinate and implement community risk reduction activities and campaigns. In addition to public educational and service programs, the incumbent provides the most current risk reduction information directly to individuals, crews and the public. This position receives direction from the Deputy Chief of EMS. The work is performed with considerable independence and is reviewed through meetings, regular status reports and results obtained. Performance is evaluated through review of reports, briefings, program effectiveness, coordination with coworkers and observation of daily activities.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises and coordinates the volunteers in the Falls Prevention and Veterans In Prevention (VIP) program.
Essential Job Functions
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Falls Prevention, Education and Outreach
- Reviews medical reports for Falls patients to identify citizens in need of prevention training and analyze which patients could benefit from intervention services.
- Makes contact and conducts home visits with Falls patients and recommends standard CDC interventions.
- Coordinates with the Community Resource Paramedic for home inspection visits and other services as needed.
- Builds a community Falls database tracking for reoccurrence, effectiveness and geographical high-need areas for intense targeted training. Areas of high need would receive targeted falls prevention education and outreach.
- Provides Falls Prevention Classes at Senior Centers, Assisted Living Homes, and Nursing Homes.
- Support Prevention, Education and Outreach
- Works with the EMS Division to identify emerging trends and geographical high-need areas that might benefit from intense targeted training, outreach, prevention and education.
- Coordinates with other department staff in delivering community risk reduction, enhanced population health education, and service programs to the community.
- Provides direct presentation and/or coordination for community risk and enhanced population health education through education programs.
- Supports CPR, First Aid and AED Access outreach and access for the public.
- Attends and assists with staff meetings, trainings and seminars.
- Works with South County Fire staff on special projects.
- Participates in continuing education and advancing professional development.
- Organizes, schedules and coordinates involvement in community-specific events that forward the endeavors of community risk reduction and population health and other activities.
- Produces flyers and brochures utilizing graphics software, and maintains a ready supply of printed information on community risk reduction subjects.
- Serves as an education and information resource, provides education and training; makes presentations to public groups, commissioners, co-workers and others; prepares public displays and project-oriented presentations.
- Acts as the liaison between South County Fire and public education-related issues facing the public.
- Represents South County Fire at various community and professional committees and organizational events.
- Researches grants for new and ongoing programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Of:
- Fire behavior; organizational structure; human behavior during fire; injury causes/prevention.
- EMS prevention and risk reduction, including senior fall intervention strategies.
- Community risk, injury prevention strategies; safety messages; hazard identification and correction.
- Emergency reporting; liability issues; public relations.
- High risk audiences and behaviors; special needs; social and cultural trends; community resources.
- Personal image and professionalism.

Additional Requirements
Education and Experience: Associate degree in education, communication, journalism or closely related field required OR two or more years' experience in public safety, communications, public relations OR any combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Preferred qualifications:
- Experience conducting home visits/inspections.
- Two or more years' experience in the Fire Service, Prevention, Outreach or Public Relations.
Special Requirements:
- Must have and maintain a valid WA State Driver's License with acceptable driving record at the time of conditional offer.
- Ability to obtain the following certifications within the first year of employment: First Aid-CPR AED Instructor and any requested community risk reduction course.
Physical Demands: Office activities require the ability to sit for long periods of time and move throughout the office or field; ability to perform manipulative skills required for word processing; ability to lift, carry, and maneuver various educational supplies and equipment up to 50 pounds; ability to stoop, kneel and bend; ability to read computer screen, various documents and forms; hearing and speech abilities to effectively communicate and perform duties.
Working Conditions: Work takes place in a variety of environments including office settings, classrooms, meetings and public events which may take place outdoors in inclement weather. Travel required performing job duties, attending training and seminars. Employee must be able to effectively utilize computers and related software, social and other media networks, printers, photocopiers, audio visual equipment, telephone system and fax. Also utilizes training equipment such as CPR mannequins, AED trainers etc. The employee may be required to work evenings and weekends as necessary.
