Located in the Puget Sound, just 25 miles north of Seattle, Washington, and less than 2 hours south of the Canadian border, Island Transit provides public transportation for people who live and work on Whidbey and Camano Islands, as well as cross county commuter routes to the neighboring cities of Stanwood, Everett, and Mount Vernon. Both islands offer residents breathtaking views of the Puget Sound and the Olympic and Cascade Mountain Ranges, picturesque farmland, forests and shorelines. Island Transit's headquarters are in Coupeville on Whidbey Island, which is accessible by bridge or ferry.
Island Transit is a fare free transit system, providing fixed route, route deviated/paratransit, and vanpool services. Island Transit was formed in 1987 and is a municipal corporation separate from Island County. As of 2018, Island Transit employs 122 FTE's, with an annual operating budget of $12.3 million. The agency is funded by a 0.9% sales tax in Island County and a combination of state and federal grants.
Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides leadership and focus for all Island Transit services and resources and is responsible for accomplishing the agency's mission and vision. The Executive Director establishes operational goals and objectives, short and long-range plans, and policies and procedures to present to the Board for endorsement, ensuring the policy direction of the Board is carried out in a timely and cost-effective manner.
A bachelor's degree in Public Administration, General Business Administration, Transportation Planning or a related field, and five years of management experience in a public agency is required. Transportation experience, including fixed route, maintenance, finance, planning, marketing, customer service, and human resources, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job, is required. The selected candidate must have a valid Washington State driver's license, or the ability to obtain one by time of hire, and have a clean driving record.
