Lab Services Supervisor
The Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) is seeking a motivated individual for an entry-level Environmental Health and Safety role. The main responsibilities of the Lab Services Supervisor (LSS) is to manage the staffing and smooth operation of the Lab Services group. Under the umbrella of the Health and Safety function, Lab Services members function as lab assistants for ISB’s lab groups. The LSS is responsible for managing lab maintenance, including lab waste, glass cleaning, and decontamination of facilities. The LSS is expected to mentor the Lab Services team and volunteer their assistance wherever helpful.
Primary responsibilities include:
1. Supervising the Lab Services group, including hiring, training, managing schedule and workload, purchasing supplies, and maintaining an inventory.
2. Daily and periodic safety responsibilities such as:
• Managing lab-related tasks (glass delivery, pickup, washing, and autoclaving; hazardous and chemical waste pickup and disposal; media and buffer prep; mycoplasma testing via PCR, decontamination) and keeping up-to-date SOP’s
• Decontamination of weigh stations, centrifuges, and water baths
• Monthly testing/monitoring of safety equipment
• Chemical management tasks including but not limited to scanning in and out all chemicals, determining waste streams, designating hazards for regulatory reporting, yearly inventory audit, track chemical expiration dates, evaluating safe chemical storage
• Maintaining specialized areas including tissue culture and BSL2 facilities, cell sorting and microscopy facilities, cryo storage, particle clean room, mass spec facility
• Manage lab coat ordering, stock, etc.
3. Training employees on proper respirator usage for the Respiratory Protection Program and manage training logs.
4. Acting as backup for certain EH&S duties including New Employee Safety Orientation and Hazard Analysis
5. Maintaining and Updating the Safety Manual, safety related documents, and regulatory materials as needed.
6. Fostering and maintaining a high level of safety of ISB laboratories and shared spaces.
7. Mentoring Lab Services team on laboratory skills and professional development.
QUALIFICATIONS:
BS in scientific or related field. At least 1 year of laboratory experience or 2 years of coursework in biology, chemistry or closely related field. Must have good interpersonal and communications skills; able to work effectively with variety of people in a diverse workforce; adaptable to changing work requirements; willing to multi-task; high degree of professional integrity; strong client service orientation.
All ISB staff members are expected to have baseline technical skills and the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately over email, the intranet/forum, etc. Employees should be able to use Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint (or open source equivalent) at a functional level.
