The Pediatric Nurse position supports the Program's birth to five family center philosophy, policies, goals, objectives, and, in doing so, has a measurable impact on improving the health outcomes for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their parents. Pediatric Nurse responsibilities are

  • Supervising the developmental (heights, weights, vision, hearing, iron and lead) screening and Health Alert systems
  • Taking the lead
    • in ensuring follow-up on screening results and
    • in developing health care plans when staff or parent identifies a medical condition that requires the use of special precautions or strategies in order to keep the child safe and healthy 
  • Acting as the in-house health resource
  • Analyzing program health data, submitting regular reports that may include recommendations to strengthen health services to the Executive Director
  • Anticipating future health trends and articulate credible visions that enable innovative and appropriate program planning
  • Reviewing and updating, as needed, Health Protocols
  • Observing each classroom, class and group socialization at least once during the school year for health and safety; writing report and, if needed, including recommendations
  • Conducting file reviews, monitoring for data integrity between paper and electronic files
  • Working collaboratively with staff
  • Participating in program's self-assessment
  • Sharing health services monitoring responsibilities to ensure quality, consistency, continuity and fidelity to OHS performance standards, health protocols, policies and procedures
  • Serving as a liaison with community health care programs, and state and federal health care agencies
  • Preparing health reports, as requested by Executive Director  
  • Providing training, if asked, for staff and/or parents

The Pediatric Nurse does not provide clinical care (observation and treatment of patients, medical practice, nursing care or diagnosis) or direct health services such as examinations, immunizations, first aid, administering of medications or other nursing care duties to enrolled infants, toddlers and preschoolers.




  • Must be a Registered Nurse and licensed in the state of Washington
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited college/university
  • Educational/experience of minimally three years working with infants, toddlers, preschoolers in a community health and/or childcare-school setting
  • Experience of minimally three years working with low-income, refugee, and/or immigrant young (0-6 years old) children and families
  • Strong computer skills working in database, WORD, EXCEL, and email
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Work history documenting successful collaborative and teamwork skills


  • Experience within the last 5 years working with Office of Head Start Performance Standards
  • Master's Degree in relevant course of study
  • Five or more years working in a same/similar position in Head Start, Early Head Start, or same/similar granted funded program


  • A valid Washington driver license, reliable vehicle, automobile insurance and a clean driving record required
  • Ability to travel to various sites
  • Criminal Records and Child Abuse Index, Sexual Offender Registry, Health and Tuberculosis (TB) test clearances required (see conditions of employment)


Additional Information


  • Knowledge of the information and techniques used for well-child care, prenatal, postpartum care, and communicable diseases.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the  Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment Medicaid services for children
  • Knowledge of early child development, newborn, infant, toddler and child health issues.
  • Experience with data collection, analysis, and reporting to stakeholders including parents, staff, program management and program leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to and work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work as part of a team, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, receive and provide feedback, and manage dynamic interchanges in meetings
  • Willingness to comply with established agency performance standards, which may include: productivity/personal responsibility, client/customer service orientation, embracing a team player orientation, entrepreneurialism, and maintaining a professional demeanor
  • Willingness to comply with Standards of Conduct by promoting the unique identity of each child and family; conforming with program confidentiality policies; following child supervision and guidance policies; and refraining from soliciting or accepting personal gratuities, favors, or anything of significant monetary value from contractors or potential contractors

Before Starting Work:

  • Paperwork indicating negative TB Test or clear chest x-ray
  • Proof of Tdap (Pertussis) vaccination
  • Show proof of a cleared Portable Background Check from the Washington State Department of Early Learning  (NOTE:  if you do not have a current PBC, you must first create an account in the DEL's MERIT system by clicking here.  The fees for obtaining a PBC are your responsibility. The entire process of obtaining a PBC takes 3-4 weeks.  You may not start working until we have a copy of your cleared PBC.)

Within three days of hire:

  • Submit proof of US Citizenship or ability to work in US (must show original social security or Alien Registration Card/Work Permit, as well as one piece of picture identification)
  • Completion of all pertinent personnel/payroll forms
  • Completion of the following Head Start mandated trainings:  Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse/Neglect

Within 30 days of hire:

  • Receipt of official college transcripts showing education requirements met for the position
  • Receipt of copy of required certifications, credentials, and/or licenses

Within 60 days of hire:

  • Signed statement by a health provider that the employee is free from communicable diseases and physically able to perform job responsibilities

Conditions of Continued Employment:

  • Successfully complete an annual work task review
  • Keep all certifications and clearances in current status
  • Complete 15 professional development hours every year
