Health AssistantHead Start Snohomish County
SCOPE OF WORK
The Health Assistant will work primarily with the Teacher/Family Advocates (TFAs) and Home Visitors to support contractual health requirements. This is a classified position and reports to the Health & Family Services Director. The Pediatric Nurse directs the Health Assistant's daily work.
SUPPORT TASKS AND EXPECTATIONS
The Health Assistant works with TFAs and Home Visitors to identify, refer and follow-up on health concerns and health requirements for all assigned children. Under the general supervision of the Health & Family Services Director and with direct input from and consultation with the Pediatric Nurse, the Health Assistant will:
- Follow the health protocols
- Complete all health screenings on children at centers, which include vision screens, hearing screens, heights and weights prior to the child's 45th day in program
- Complete data entry for health screens
- Prepare CDC graphs for staff to share with parents
- Prepare screening results report for staff to share with parents
- Assist TFA or Home Visitor in arranging follow up care for children with identified needs, as a result of the health screens
- Assist parents in obtaining an annual Physical and Dental exam prior to the child's 90th day, in coordination with the TFA or Home Visitor
- Assist parents in obtaining the required annual HCT and Lead Screenings, in coordination with the TFA or Home Visitor
- Follow up with parents and/or TFA or Home Visitor on any recommended treatment needs
- Assist parents in maintaining their child on an annual exam schedule, in coordination with TFA or Home Visitor
- Complete data entry for immunizations
- Review immunizations for compliance with state requirements
- Communicate with parents and staff regarding status of immunizations if not complete
- Maintain up-to-date health records and record keeping systems
- Complete all health reports as needed
- Monitor health requirements using the organization's established database
- Participate in health staffing as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
The Health Assistant must possess the following skills and knowledge:
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Familiarity with the factors affecting low-income families
- Ability to relate to and work with parents of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and educational backgrounds
- Flexibility, as this position reports to different people in different program areas. The work flow and type of work changes throughout the year
- Ability to handle confidential and sometimes highly sensitive fiscal, client, staff or programmatic information and ability to discern a position's need to know status
- Strong organizational, record-keeping, and documentation skills
- Computer literacy, including the ability to write, respond and send emails, establish and update work calendar, complete database entry and generate established reports, and create documents in a word processing program
- Effective time-management skills
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS
The Health Assistant must be able to:
- Operate a variety of standard office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements.
- Observe, compare, or monitor data and behavior to determine compliance with other prescribed standards.
- Operate a motor vehicle requiring a standard driver's license; some travel between sites is required.
- Set up or removes folding tables and chairs; some lifting and use of hand-truck required.
- Walk over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces and climb stairs.
- When working in a classroom when children are present, must be able to supervise individual and groups of children by positioning themselves so as to keep them within visual and auditory range, accounting for the whereabouts of each child at all times, and ensuring that no child is ever left alone or unsupervised.
- Clock in and out for work shifts and lunch breaks using the Time & Attendance system; record and report own absences using the Absence Management system.
- Twelve college quarter credits in family support, public health, health education, nursing or another field directly related to job responsibilities
- Two years of full-time experience with same/similar work responsibilities
- Within the last five (5) years, employment experience
- That exhibits work skills in
- prioritizing multiple tasks, establishing and meeting deadlines with limited supervision
- managing multiple and complex tracking/documentation electronic and paper systems
- providing logistical and clerical support to three or more supervisors/managers
- That exhibits strong computer skills and proficiency in
- minimally Word and Excel software for Windows;
- developing complex spread-sheets, documents, and pamphlets; and
- database program(s).
- Experience working with low-income families with very young children on issues of health and health treatment.
- That exhibits work skills in
- Spanish Language Proficiency
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Hiring for this position is on the condition that candidates meet the following requirements:
Before Starting Work:
- Paperwork indicating negative TB Test or clear chest x-ray
- Proof of Tdap (Pertussis) vaccination
- Show proof of a cleared Portable Background Check from the Washington State Department of Early Learning (NOTE: if you do not have a current PBC, you must first create an account in the DEL's MERIT system by clicking here. The fees for obtaining a PBC are your responsibility. The entire process of obtaining a PBC takes 3-4 weeks. You may not start working until we have a copy of your cleared PBC.)
Within three days of hire:
- Submit proof of US Citizenship or ability to work in US (must show original social security or Alien Registration Card/Work Permit, as well as one piece of picture identification).
- Completion of all pertinent personnel/payroll forms.
Within 60 days of hire:
- Signed statement by a health provider that the employee is free from communicable diseases and physically able to perform job responsibilities.
Condition of continued employment
- Successfully complete a nine-month probationary period.
- Keep all certifications and clearances in current status
- Complete 15 hours of Professional Development Training each year
