The Center for Academic Engagement Math and Science Coordinator provides leadership and management for tutoring centers at all campus locations of Guilford Technical Community College, and specifically coordinates tutoring services for students in GTCC’s science and math classes. The coordinator provides tutor training and supervision, develops and delivers tutor training, coordinates center operations, and designs supports for students in math and science courses. The Center for Academic Engagement Math and Science Coordinator motivates and guides tutors, staff, and students in an inclusive, professional, and learner-centered environment. A creative and dynamic leader, the Center for Academic Engagement Math and Science Coordinator collaborates and engages with internal and external stakeholders to initiate partnerships and enhance student success.
Tutoring Center Management
- Contribute to the overall success of GTCC students by designing, coordinating, and delivering innovative learning support strategies to meet student needs.
- Coordinate the daily operation of dynamic, learner-centered tutoring labs.
- Collaborate with other coordinators to direct the learning labs at all campuses of GTCC as a unified entity of the Center for Academic Engagement.
- Schedule tutoring center operating hours and staff coverage using data including the schedule of classes, course-taking patterns, and records of student usage.
- Collaborate with a diverse group of colleagues to research, evaluate, and implement new ideas for learning support.
- Proactively develop and deliver programming to enhance student math and science skills across all campuses. Tutor students in math or science as necessary.
- Effectively market Center for Academic Engagement services to all college constituencies.
- In collaboration with the other coordinators, establish and supervise the implementation of standardized learner-centered lab policies and procedures.
- Anticipate learning lab needs and follow college procedures to request necessary tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Collaborate with faculty, tutors, and library staff to develop collections of reference materials.
- Effectively manage fiscal, human, and operational resources.
- Gather and analyze appropriate data to identify usage trends, analyze operations, and recommend improvements.
Tutor Recruitment, Training, and Supervision
- Recruit and directly supervise professional and peer tutors who provide expertise, experience, and encouragement to students.
- Recruit and directly supervise Center for Academic Engagement assistants and work study students who provide proactive customer service to support clients of the learning lab.
- Develop, implement, and assess comprehensive tutor training program.
- Foster the professional development of tutors and staff.
Student Retention
- Participate in college-wide events and retention programs. Attend new student orientations, information sessions, and recruitment events as needed.
- In collaboration with college stakeholders, coordinate the annual schedule of student success workshops.
Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

- Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, science, or related field from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution.
- Master’s degree or higher in mathematics, science, or related field from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution.
- Three years of experience providing learning support and/or instruction.
- Previous work experience in an educational setting.
- Experience developing and implementing instructional programming to promote skill acquisition.
- Experience hiring, training, and supervising employees, including conducting performance evaluations.
- Greater than three years of experience providing learning support and/or instruction.
- Previous work experience at a community college or university.
- Experience with integrated student information systems (e.g., Datatel Colleague, Banner, etc.).
- Proficiency in using Learning Management Systems (e.g., Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard).
- Proficiency in using software to track academic support services (e.g., TutorTrac).
- Experience hiring, training, and supervising tutors in a post-secondary setting.
The Math and Science Coordinator shall possess an understanding of and commitment to the nature and role of the Community College, particularly its “open door” policy. He/she shall have demonstrated personal and professional competence for the responsibilities assigned. The Math and Science Coordinator must be able to:

Must complete CRLA tutor training through Level III within one year of hire.
The following (compliance) training is required and must be completed within the first 30 days of hire with annual refresher training thereafter:
