Public Works Technician - Wastewater
Position Summary: Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair and maintenance and replacement of wastewater facilities and systems.
Examples of Job Duties:
1. Inspects, maintains, operates and/or repairs malfunctions at the wastewater treatment plant; repairs gauges, pumps, filters and other controls and equipment at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the system are functioning properly.
2. Works with assigned crews in installing new wastewater lines and collection systems.
3. Assists the Wastewater Treatment Plant Lead in maintaining a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, lab work, etc.;
4. Determines the locations of gas, telephone, power, television, and water and wastewater lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.
5. Responds to complaints regarding wastewater problems, evaluates situations, and explains findings to supervisor.
6. Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
7. Drives trucks of various sizes and weights related to the operations and maintenance of the wastewater collections system.
8. Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the wastewater department.
9. Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
10. Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
11. Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling.
Qualifications
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities required by the Wastewater Division; • Working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to work completed in the Wastewater Division; • Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment and facilities maintenance; • Skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment; • Ability to train and provide guidance to entry-level or part-time employees; • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; • Ability to work safely, ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; • Ability to handle stressful situations, maintaining composure while under pressure; • Ability to follow and implement City safety guidelines and procedures; • Ability to provide quality customer service to the public, demonstrating a professional and can-do attitude while administering City regulations; • Ability to perform at a level commensurate with length of service; • Ability to produce a quality work product in a timely and efficient manner; • Ability to manage multiple tasks at one time and follow through on commitments; • Ability to use good judgment in making decisions; • Ability to provide innovative solutions to difficult problems, taking initiative to take on assignments without being asked; • Ability to work as a member of and support a team, treating others fairly and consistently and exhibiting a positive attitude; • Ability to follow rules provided by the City’s Code of Conduct and Personnel Policy.
Special Requirements
Tech I • Valid Washington State Driver’s License and clean driving record • Flagger certification, confined space entry, first aid/CPR certification within one (1) year of hire • Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator In-Training (OIT) within one (1) year of hire. Tech II • 24 months of acceptable performance with no corrective actions needed • Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I Certification • CDL certification with tanker endorsement • Standby duty required at this level • Ability to reach Stanwood within forty (40) minutes of call-out.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sander, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch, etc.
