Maintenance Worker I - Street & Storm/Sewer
Salary: $3,920.00 - $4,978.00 Monthly
Position Summary
It is anticipated that two vacancies will be filled with this recruitment process. There is currently one vacancy in the Street Division and one vacancy in the Storm/Sewer Division.
The testing process for this position may include a practical skills test and an oral board interview.
Candidates must successfully complete a pre-employment medical exam upon condition of hire.
Salary range listed above are 2017 rates (2018 salary range will be determined pending settlement of a successor collective bargaining agreement).
These positions performs a variety of basic duties, depending on the assigned division, related to the installation, inspection, maintenance, repair, and servicing of municipal streets, right-of-ways or cleaning operations for sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems.

When assigned to Street Maintenance Division:
Maintenance Worker I assigned to all departments perform these essential functions:
- Installs, inspects, maintains, repairs, and services municipal utilities, facilities or equipment as assigned.
- Assists senior employees with operation of maintenance equipment, such as weed eaters, hedge trimmers, back pack blower, and various hand and power tools.
- Assists with traffic control situations including flagging and work zone setup for protection of crews and equipment at the jobsite.
- May be assigned to other divisions performing work requiring similar skills during times of peak work load, labor shortage, emergency situations, or other instances when critical work is to be completed.
- Assists in confined space entry situations, such as working in ditches, within shored excavations, storm and sanitary manholes, or enclosed storm retention facilities.
- Be accepting of guidance, direction, and feedback from others.
In addition to the essential duties listed above, Maintenance Worker I also performs the following essential duties specific to the department/division assigned.
When assigned to Street Maintenance Division:
- Assist in pothole patching, utility cut, paving, and full street overlay paving.Duties will include shoveling hot or cold asphalt pavement, raking, and hand compacting asphalt products.
- Right-of-way maintenance duties include cutting grass and brush, weed-eating, straightening sign posts, and cleaning signs.
- Assist senior employees with the operation of camera equipment, vacuum/high pressure water truck, slope mower and off-road dump truck.
- Assist in cleaning operations for sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems.
Qualifications
A combination of the experience, education, and training listed below which provides an equivalent background to perform the work of this position.
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- One year of experience performing a variety of the essential duties related to the installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of city streets and right-of-ways and/or cleaning operations for sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems.
- Must possess a Washington State Driver's License.
- Knowledge of and ability to operate equipment and vehicles used to perform essential duties.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing vehicle and equipment operations and ability to work safely and comply with all safety regulations, standards, guidelines, and practices.
- Must possess, or have the ability to possess within six months of hire date, first aid and CPR certifications.
- Must possess, or have the ability to possess within six months of hire date, flagging certifications.

This position regularly works outside in various weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee may be exposed to physical hazards from mechanical and electrical equipment and may work in hazardous areas under hazardous conditions. The employee occasionally works in traffic, near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee occasionally may be at risk from electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
This position works a regular schedule however the employee may be called to work at irregular times in emergency situations.
