MAINTENANCE & OPERATIONS SUPERINTENDENT
A WATER SYSTEMS EXPERT AND MOTIVATIONAL LEADER
The Alderwood Water & Wastewater District seeks an experienced water and/ or wastewater leader to supervise and oversee day-to-day operations of assigned areas within the Maintenance and Operations (M&O) Department. Reporting directly to the M&O Director, the Superintendent is responsible for the management of all water distribution and wastewater collection systems as well as District facilities. This individual will supervise, direct, and mentor six Field Operations Managers and a SCADA/Electrical Manager.
The M&O Superintendent must have a strong understanding of the operation and maintenance practices of public water and/or wastewater systems. Past experience operating, maintaining, or administering systems that include equipment such as mains, lines, lift stations, pump stations, reservoirs, tanks, meters, valves, and related equipment is essential to be successful in this position.
The individual selected for this position will both have the necessary field experience and be capable of providing motivational leadership. Job candidates will be expected to show they can lead others toward common goals by creating and maintaining high employee morale and a safe and trusting work environment.
The successful candidate will be a clear and authentic communicator capable of representing the District in front of community groups, industry/professional associations, elected officials, and the general public. They should have exceptional customer service skills and a strong ability to solve problems and develop creative solutions.
The M&O Superintendent needs to have strong persuasion skills as an advocate for the maintenance needs of the District. This position is responsible for coordinating the Department budget process while ensuring that the necessary equipment and resources are available and that staff is well trained. The successful candidate will work in cooperation with capital projects staff to ensure that maintenance needs are being addressed in the comprehensive plan, and that infrastructure is being constructed and developed with long-term maintenance and operational needs in mind.
Salary: $91,944 to $123,204 annually
Requirements: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the requirements of the job.
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be five years of progressively responsible experience supervising and managing the maintenance and operation of water and/or wastewater systems. A Water Distribution Manager IV certification from the WA Department of Health is required within one year of employment. A college degree is a strong plus.

The Alderwood Water & Wastewater District is a regional public health organization that provides clean water to a community that includes over 45 square miles, seven municipalities and unincorporated areas throughout south Snohomish County. The District incorporated in 1931 and is the largest water/wastewater district in Washington. Currently, the District is undertaking many initiatives with the goal of creating lasting change that will enable employees to provide clean water service well into the future. The M&O Department is rapidly growing. Other changes include the development of a five-year strategic plan, a new facilities plan, the creation of a leadership development program, implementation of a document management system, installing a modern geographic information system (GIS), and asset management.
The M&O Superintendent directly reports to M&O Director David Barnes. The department has a total of 89 employees and provides service in the areas of wastewater collection, water distribution, water quality, facilities management, and wastewater treatment. Department employees work out of the Maintenance and Operations Facility in Lynnwood, WA and the Picnic Point Wastewater Treatment Facility in Edmonds, WA. Approximately three quarters of the department’s workforce primarily perform their job functions in the field.
A COMMITTED PUBLIC SERVANT AND MENTOR
The ideal candidate will have multiple years of experience supervising and overseeing the maintenance and operations of water and/or wastewater systems for a special purpose district, municipality, or other public entity. Experience in both water and wastewater is preferred but not required. Job candidates should have experience in like-sized or larger organizations that contain multiple employee divisions that manage and perform work on a diverse range of programs and functions.
The individual selected for this position will be committed to public service and understand processes and procedures related to public administration and finance.

The M&O Superintendent will need to have strong public speaking skills and should be able to speak comfortably and persuasively in front of both large and small audiences.
